Reading, Writing & Arithmetic

Reading, Writing & Arithmetic used to be the basics of school.  Children would learn their letters in kindergarten and start learning to read about second grade.  Writing was done with a pencil and wide ruled paper that had little dotted lines in the middle so you would know how to write a capital letter and how to write a lower case letter.  Arithmetic was really about adding and subtracting and multiplication and division.

Now kids learn to read in preschool; writing is “typed” on a computer and no one even knows what the word “arithmetic” means.  Math problems are done on calculators and spreadsheets.  Things change.

But there’s one thing that doesn’t change.  Malachi 3:6 says, “I the Lord do not change.”  and Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  1 Peter 1:25 in the Message Bible says “God’s word goes on and on forever.”

Three reminders that the Lord and His word never change.  As you study the never-changing word of God, go back to basics:

Read His Word.
Write down your prayers in a prayer journal.
Use your math skills to count your blessings.

Reading, Writing & Arithmetic.  I guess as some things change, some things really do stay the same!

Queen of the Bologna Sandwich

Ask my daughters who makes the best bologna sandwiches of all time and they will tell you that hands down it was Grandma Young.  The World’s Best Bologna Sandwich consisted of two pieces of white bread, a piece of Eckrich® bologna, and Miracle Whip®.

You may ask what in the world could be so special about a simple bologna sandwich made of bread, bologna and dressing?   Was it that the bread was soft and fresh?  Was it that the bologna was fresh cut from the deli instead of removed from a prepackaged container?  Or was it the Miracle Whip versus plain old mayonnaise?

Or could it be the MAKER of the World’s Best Bologna Sandwich instead of the sandwich itself?  Every sandwich was made with the same brand of bread, the same kind of bologna, the same special amount of Miracle Whip… and an extra splash of love!

Yesterday was Grandma Young’s birthday and we all miss her very much.  Each one of us miss her for different reasons and more so at different times.  But my girls especially miss the extra tender loving care taken in making lunch by the Queen of the Bologna Sandwich.

Whatever task you are doing for someone – even the smallest everyday task – add a splash of TLC and make your special someone feel extra-special today.

Missing you, Genieve and having a bologna sandwich today in honor of you.

Perfect Timing

Number 52 passes the basketball to 42 as he jumps above the rim and SLAM!  Ally-oop for 2!!  Perfect Timing!

Baseball 90 miles an hour right down the middle. Number 5 connects and with a crack of the bat it sails out to center field seats.  Home run!!  Perfect Timing on that swing!

Hail Mary pass thrown down mid-field, caught by the wide receiver and touchdown!!  Perfect timing on that pass/reception combo!

Perfect timing.  Everything aligns up the way it should.  Conditions are perfect and success is achieved.

That’s our God.  He’s never in a hurry but He is always right on time.  Conditions are just as He wants them.  It may not be our timing or our conditions.  But He grows us to exactly where He wants us and then shows Himself in just the right way at just the right time.  Thank you, Lord that even when you’re late by my watch, you have Perfect Timing!

Over The River And Through The Woods

“Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go.”

I love this song.  It makes me think of going to my grandma’s house when I was little.  One of my fondest memories is of the ice cream truck coming down the street.  I remember hearing the chimes of the song and getting a dollar from my mom to run to the street to catch the truck full of ice cream surprises.

I would take my little sister by the hand and we would walk to the corner to wait impatiently.  We usually had enough money to buy two of the cheapest ice cream novelties available.  It didn’t even matter what we got because it was the excitement of seeing the bright colored, jingle-singing truck arriving outside grandma’s house.

I miss those days and miss my grandma.

What sweet memories do you have of your grandparents growing up?   Is there someone from your past that you need to go visit and reminisce with about the good old days?

Make time to go “over the river and through the woods” to spend a little precious time with that someone special today.
