He Really Is.

My father-in-law had a very serious scare and we thought we were going to lose him.  Even the medical personnel are not sure how he survived such a dangerous low blood pressure.  But he bounced back for what seems like his 9th life!

As my sister-in-law was taking my 12-year-old nephew to the hospital to see him, my nephew was very quiet.  When she asked him if he was okay, he responded thoughtfully:  “Jesus really is the Savior”.

What more can you say?  Out of the mouth of babes.

Give up your worries.  Give up your striving.  Give up your control.  To the One who is real.  It could not have been said any better.  Jesus really is the Savior.

Pick Me! Pick Me!!

Do you remember being in elementary school and it was time to pick teams?  Kids would jump around, hands in the air, voices screaming “pick me, pick me”!

We see versions of this today on television.  The Price is Right show scans the audience showing people dressed in various attire to draw attention to the producers to perhaps get an edge on being picked to compete to win prizes.

When I was younger there was a show on TV called, Let’s Make A Deal.  The crazier people dressed, the more likely they were to be picked to make a deal with Monte Hall.

Today’s version of a “Pick Me” television show comes in the form of reality shows.  We see The Bachelor and The Bachelorette shows where people do all kinds of things to get the star of the show to pick them.  The show, Survivor, includes contestants forming “pick me” alliances with other contestants in an attempt to be the winner.

The things people do to be picked to be on a winning team!  The devil and his schemes are no different than a crazy television show.  He dangles shiny things in our faces to get our attention.  He disguises choices to look better on the surface than they really are.  He does anything he can to get our attention and get us to pick him and his schemes over Christ and His godly ways.

Let’s be very cautious as we go about our day today not to be distracted by the devil-in-disguise schemes and choices.  Pray before you make a decision and ask for God to lead you to make good choices.  The devil is jumping up and down screaming “pick me, pick me” while Jesus is standing in the corner, arms open wide with a loving smile on his face, begging you to pick Him.  The difference is the end prize.  One choice leads to peace and the other leads to destruction.

May your day be filled with all good picks!

Who Do You Look Like?

The older I get, the more I look like my mother.  I’m certainly not complaining about that.  I think my mom is beautiful both inside and out.  I can only hope to be half the woman, wife and mother she is.

When I look at pictures, I see the resemblance.  Even our feet are made the same.  But sometimes I catch myself thinking, acting or saying things just like my mom.  I look back on the days of my kids growing up and when I had a day off work, I always made cookies for the girls to have when they got home from school – just like my momma did.

When my kids were younger, we made homemade Christmas cards, wrapping paper, cookies and gingerbread houses – a lot of the same things my mom did with me growing up.

When I had to discipline the girls or give them advice, I wasn’t always as good as my mom was.  My mom is a great listener and then gives her opinion only when asked and does it with great grace yet firm instruction and discipline.   I don’t ever remember getting bad advice or direction or correction from my mother.

I find myself making our girls special meals and treats when they are home just like my mom always did when I came home from college and how she still does now 30 years later.  There’s just something about food that we use to show our love to our daughters.

But most importantly I see my mom follow Jesus and show the true Christian witness.  I strive everyday to be more like Jesus and I fail miserably.  But I am so thankful that He forgives me and gives me another chance.  Just like my mom did.

Do you look or act like one of your parents?  Sometimes that’s good and sometimes that’s not so good.  But when we strive to “look” more like our Heavenly Father, then we know we’re on the right track.

Get out your Bible and look for your ancestry tree in the pages of scripture and find your roots in the foundation of the cross and the One who died for you yet rose to live again.  I hope when I grow up, I can look just like Jesus.

What Time Is It?

I love unique clocks.  On the bulk head above the columns that separate my dining room and living room, I keep the collection of my clocks.  When I look at them, I can remember a story about each one – where I bought it or who gave it to me.  The surf board is from our visit to Santa Monica and the old fashioned camera is from our trip to Alaska.

The octopus and the HOME clock were gifts from my daughters.  The Elvis clock was purchased while we were in Memphis, TN making our very first bucket delivery for Bucket Buddies Mission to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

The other side of the bulk head has clocks displaying times from different cities around the world.  This weekend I spent an hour changing batteries, resetting times and dusting all of those clocks.  I don’t know how many times I asked myself “what time is it?” as I was changing those clocks.

And today I ask myself the same question only in a different context.  What time is it?  I will tell you what time it is for me.  It’s time for me to stop wallowing around and being aggravated with my job.  Things aren’t always going to be “peachy” and it’s time I realize that I’m not there to just manage the trademarks, review marketing literature and approve invoices.  I’m there to try to make a difference to people by being positive and showing kindness and love to those who need a friend.  I’m there to be a light for Christ instead of a negative complainer.  It’s time for me to quit allowing negative people to bring me down.  It’s time for me to bring light into a dark situation.

What time is it for you?
Is it time to put down the ax and stop grinding?
Is it time to reach out to the wayward child and give a hug?
Is it time to forgive the unforgivable friend?
Is it time to pick up the phone and call your distant parent?
Is it time to give up that addiction?
Is it time to get healthy?
Is it time to start your weight loss journey?
Is it time to be kinder and less grouchy?
Is it time to accept Christ?
Is it time to get back on the path to living for Him?

I have no idea what time it is for you but what I do know is that today is the day and it’s time to quit putting off what you know you need to do.  I didn’t wake up to see what time it was at 4 a.m. to not be able to go back to sleep for nothing.  This blog was weighing on my mind and heavy on my own heart.  I knew it was time for me to snap out of it and get back to serving the Lord.

What time is it for you?  Whatever your “IT” is ……….it’s time.
