What’s Your Megaphone Used For?

You all know what a megaphone is, right?  It’s a cone-shaped object that people use to amplify their voice when needing additional attention for their cause.  The most common use of a megaphone is probably at a sporting event.  We see cheerleaders use them to fire up the crowd with the latest cheer to rally around their team.

Today I ask you:  what’s your megaphone used for?

Maybe you say, “I don’t even know what is important to me.”  “If I had a megaphone, I don’t know what I would use it for; what I would shout out loud for.”

I bet if you stop and think, you have a cause that means a lot to you but you haven’t identified it as a “cause to get behind.”  Let’s think about it:

*Do you have a friend or family member serving in the military?
*Do you have a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease?
*Have you lost someone close to you to cancer?
*Does your heart ache to work with children and help them know how important they are?
*Do you want to bring awareness to the environment and teach others how easy it is to recycle?

I bet if you think long and hard, there are things that tug at your heart that you rally around and want to promote to others as you get on your soap box and hold your megaphone.  I have several things that cause me to grab my own megaphone – children who suffer from life-threatening illnesses, women who have goals and dreams but aren’t sure how to make them happen, and finding ways to make a difference to someone every single day.

And in the midst of all of our soap box intentions, the desires of our heart and megaphone holding we find God waiting.  He is waiting to be the center of our rally.  He wants to help us with the desires of our heart.  David tells us in Psalm 37:4 to delight ourselves in the Lord and he will give us the desires of our heart.

It doesn’t mean we will get everything we want but He knows the deep desires of our heart and if they line up with His will, He wants to help us make that happen.  Verse 5 says “commit your ways to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this:  He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”

Whatever is the deep aching desire of your heart, ask God to open the right paths for you to get out your megaphone and serve the cause.  And in all that you do, do it for Him and he will make the way straight.

Grab the megaphone.  Stand on the platform. Shout it out loud – Hip, Hip Hooray.  God is the only way!

A Bright Reminder!

As we were driving home from the airport last night, I had such a heavy heart as our family vacation was coming to an end.  With Kiersten preparing to travel as a physical therapist and Morgan heading into her last year of her Master’s program and then who knows where she will be working, I was just sad thinking it may be a while before our family can all have schedules available for vacations together.

I was thinking of coming back to everyday schedules and work demands and I actually shed a few silent tears as I looked out the window through the drizzling, wet rain shower.

And then right there in the sky, the brightest display of colors I have ever seen, was God’s promise!  A beautiful rainbow that was complete (although my picture couldn’t capture the entire thing).  God was saying, “Girl, I got you covered.  I just gave you 8 complete days with your husband and daughters; Eight wonderful days.  You are coming home to a nice house with a great job and additional family members awaiting your return.  You are blessed!  Now don’t you be crying because you need to look through those tears and this rain outside and you see all the blessings and know that I’ve got you covered.  I promise.”

I got excited and realized I have all of those great memories of not only this vacation but a lifetime full of great memories!  Thank you, Lord for a great vacation, a wonderful family, your salvation and the great reminder through the awesome display of bright colors that YOU are in control and the giver of all things!

Wake Up!

I was sleeping so soundly when my alarm went off this morning.  I usually awake a few minutes before the alarm, no matter what time I set it.  But not today.  I was really tired.  You see, I don’t like to go to bed.  I know I’ve said that in my blogs before, but I don’t like to sleep.  I like to get things done or enjoy life and sleeping to me is just wasting time! haha

So I end up staying up too late of an evening or getting up too early in the mornings in order to pack in everything I want to get done so I feel productive at the end of the day.  The older I get I realize that it’s not a wise choice.

Ten o’clock rolls around and I know in order to get the 7-8 hours of good sleep my body needs, I need to be heading to bed.  But I think I will do just one more thing or read one more chapter in my book or finish watching one more episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.  I usually head to bed around 10:00 or 10:30 but end up reading or looking at the emails on my phone before I go to sleep.

Then when the alarm goes off early the next morning, I am so exhausted and vow to go to bed earlier the next night.  But 10:00 pm rolls around and I forget that promise to myself.  I forget how tired I am going to feel the next morning if I don’t get the proper sleep.

How many times do we go down this same path with other things in our lives.  We know what we need to do but we just push the sin envelope a little further.  Alarms go off and we know we should do things differently but we start over the next day in the same destructive pattern.

What bad habit are you dealing with today that you know every time you go down that path that you shouldn’t be doing it?  What alarm goes off in your head trying to warn you and you just ignore it?  What consequences are you paying from your behavior that you know you need to change?

I know the one I mentioned is an easy fix – go to bed earlier!  Some other habits we deal with and decisions we avoid are NOT so easy fixes, but the Almighty Fixer is waiting to help you break that habit and get you on the right path to peace.  It’s time to wake up and quit ignoring the alarm.  Consider this reading a sign for us all to make the necessary changes to living in harmony with the Spirit and not against it.  It is in this we find freedom and peace ……and perhaps, even a little more rest.
