The nasty flu and cold has hit our area! It seems like everyone you talk to has some upper respiratory issues, some with fever. Sunday evening, I started with the some of the popular symptoms. I got up Monday morning and got ready for work and realized I just couldn’t do it. I was sneezing with runny nose and achy and I didn’t think I could push myself through the day at work. So I loaded up my diffuser with essential oils, took some Theraflu® cold meds, made myself a little nest on my bed and worked from home.
I don’t like to be sick. I don’t like to miss work, and frankly I don’t think I have time to rest. There is a lot I want to do and downtime isn’t on that list frequently. However, I will tell you that resting was the best thing I could have done. I woke up yesterday feeling so much better and was able to be back to normal energy-wise by the afternoon.
Why do we feel like we can’t rest? Our world has us in a whirlwind mentality. Drive thru everything. Microwaves. Smartphones. Apps, apps and more apps to help make our life easier by doing everything faster. Cram one more thing into our day and at the end of it, hold the Superman trophy of exhaustion high….if you can raise your arms to do it!
We are people who believe resting shows weakness. We find joy in telling others how much we have on our plates and then complaining about it. We run the race to see who is the most tired at the end of the day. It’s crazy.
But taking a rest on Monday was the best thing I could have done. Jesus needs us to take some downtime, too. He doesn’t want us to run around like chickens with our heads cut off and go, go, go until we are sick. He offers us rest in His arms. Take Him up on HIs offer. Like me resting on Monday, it will be the best thing you can ever do.
Rest. Even Super Heroes need down time!
Matthew 11:28 – [Jesus said] Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.
