Have you ever told someone to do something and they just flat ignored you?
Maybe it was your children when they were younger – “clean your room”.
You go in their room, and it’s just the same as when you gave the instruction.
Maybe it was your spouse – “don’t forget to pick up milk on the way home.”
They walk in empty-handed.
Maybe it was a coworker – “can you schedule the conference room for Tuesday?”
You go to the conference room for your meeting, and it is booked by someone else.
None of these instances are the end of the world. You have your child clean their room while you stand there. You go pick up the milk yourself. You find another room for the meeting.
Maybe people didn’t hear you because they 1) didn’t want to do it; 2) they forgot; 3) other things took priority. But the result is that it didn’t get done, and you were counting on that person to follow through on the request.
What has God asked you to do that you have either ignored, forgot or didn’t make a priority? You may think it’s no big deal and He can either do it Himself or find someone else to do it. But the result is that it isn’t getting done, and He is counting on you to follow through.
If you can’t remember or just have been ignoring it, stop right now and ask Him what He wants you to do TODAY. I promise you the reward will be worth the effort.
Have you ever gone on vacation and wanted to try to fit everything in one suitcase? So you start out placing things nice and neat and accepting the beautiful packing job you have created. Socks are rolled up and placed IN the shoes. Belts are circling the inside edge of the suitcase to take up less room. Things are fitting nicely.
Then you realize you still need to add the toiletry bag. So you shove that in there. Move over shoes… here comes the hair dryer… and his buddy, the curling iron. Doggone it! I forgot to pack the beach towel and sun screen. Scoot over nicely-folded shorts and make room for the beach bag!
You push and shove and zip a l-I-t-t-l-e bit. Then you decide to place your arm on the top of the suitcase and push down with all your might WHILE you zip a little bit more. Then at last you sit on the top and maneuver your hands to make the zipper pull together those little teeth that keep things secured tightly in the suitcase. You tug and pull and finally!!! All zipped up tight. Then pop…pop…pop. The zipper breaks and all your stuff that was shoved inside now peeks OUTSIDE of the zippered top.
Sometimes I believe that’s how we treat God. We pack Him nicely away in a little box thanking Him for how neat and orderly things may be going in our lives at that moment. Then we sort of forget about Him and keep placing things on top of Him – other priorities in our every day life. We shove and tug and try to keep Him in that box because we have our own way of doing things. We think we know a better plan than He does. He may not do it right – at least the way we think is right.
Then BAM – He blows our little plans wide open with a much bigger plan. He overtakes the other ideas and shows Himself fully to us and reminds us that He is not to be kept in a box. He is not limited to only a small amount of space. He thinks BIG and He gets it done – His way!
Isaiah 55: 8 says “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
God has bigger plans for us. God has a much cooler way to answer our requests than we can even imagine. Let’s quit trying to cram him in this little space and think He can only do so much. We have to believe His ways are better because I’m here to tell you – if we put Him in a suitcase, He’s gonna pop that zipper wide open!!
Do you have a favorite number? Mine is 22. I’m not sure why but I do remember being excited when I found out August 22 fell on a Saturday as Roger and I were planning our wedding! When I see the number 22 I just feel joy. I believe God uses my favorite number to remind me that He is with me. It seems that when I am praying about something heavy on my heart, the number 22 will show up on my digital clock, on a sign or on TV. I see the number 22 and just smile and thank God for reminding me that He is in control.
So on the 22nd of each month I do something special for myself. One month I may eat a big ole hot fudge sundae. Another month I may buy myself flowers – sometimes I have them delivered just so I can enjoy the thrill of delivery! Other months I may get a pedicure or go to the park and read or ride my bike leisurely for as long as I want. It’s just a day that I intentionally allow myself to enjoy God’s blessings of LIFE.
Yes. God wants us to enjoy the blessings He gives to us. Think about if you gave a gift to a friend, your mom or your child and that person never did use or wear that gift. We would be a little hurt by the fact that the person didn’t enjoy the gift you picked out especially for them. They were always too busy to enjoy that gift.
I think that’s how we are with the blessings God gives to us sometimes. We might take them for granted. We try to shove our blessings to the side to fill our lives with one more meeting, one more chore or one more email. Stop today and think about all the blessings you have and how you may be ignoring them.
Maybe your favorite number can be a reminder somehow to stop and think about how you can thank God for these little blessings He gives you and try to find time to enjoy them a little more. Find your number………then enjoy your blessings!!
I’m heading to enjoy my “22” with my friend at a women’s conference laughing, crying and singing with Chonda Pierce and Natalie Grant!! Oh how I love 22!!
I woke up this morning worrying about stuff. It seems to be my everyday ritual. Wake up from a pretty good night’s sleep (Roger will tell you a good “snoring” night’s sleep – hahaha) and find my mind immediately going to worrying about something. I’m so tired of it. I’m so tired of waking up worrying. I’m so tired of giving everything over to God and then turning around and taking it back because I’m not sure He will do it right! So bad I know! My mind creates crazy scenarios and life is not near as bad as I create it to happen in my mind.
As I sat down to do my quiet time, I just asked the Lord to show me that I don’t have to worry any more. I asked Him to give me peace and scripture that He is going to work everything out – if not my way at least for good.
My reading in Jesus Calling devotional started out with this sentence: “Let me control your mind.” I’m not joking!! That was the first sentence and the follow-up words were just as powerful. The scripture reading associated with it led me to scripture I had underlined in my Bible:
Romans 8:24-25 (NIV) – For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
Ok, Lord. I got it. I need to quit worrying. Turn my mind over to You. Have hope in You and wait patiently. You hear my prayers. You know my heart aches and worries.
Well, by golly, I believe He does have it under control!! Thank you, Lord for that confirmation that “you got this”!
