Oh how we used to sing this little saying when we were younger! Sometimes it was for fun. The older we got the more meaning we had behind it.
Then the saying became “juvenile” and we just used sayings like “Big Fat Liar” or other adjectives with the word LIAR.
How do we know from a little tot what a liar even is? I guess because we are born with the right and wrong gene that tells us when we believe someone is lying. And boy, has lying seemed to increase over the years since I was a kid. People used to just lie about whether they ate the cookie from the cookie jar. Now we hear lies about anything and everything.
Stand in line at a grocery checkout for a few minutes and read all the lies on the rag mags. Watch TV and see how media twists the truth and drama shows “teach” you how to lie to make yourself look better and bring down your arch-enemy. People have even learned how to outsmart lie detector tests. Our whole society encompasses lying and getting out of lying with additional lies. We rate lying – “this one isn’t as bad as that one”. And don’t even get us started in the political world.
But at the root of it all is the father of lies and that is the devil. He slithers around like a sneaky snake making us believe we are not good enough, smart enough or worthy enough. He makes us think God doesn’t love us. He wants us to think God is only a god of punishment and not love.
There are now websites where you can go to see if things you read are truth or lies. Entertainment news have segments “Truth or Lie” highlighting the latest scandals and letting you know whether they are truth or fiction.
But there is only one way to combat the biggest liar of all and that is to read the truth in the Bible. And trust in the Only One who knows whether anything is truth or fiction. God is the Ultimate Truth Teller and can combat the ultimate liar with a snap of his finger.
Well the devil is that liar! Jesus said so in John 8:44 that when the devil speaks he lies and “speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
The next time you feel yourself start to believe a lie that says God doesn’t love you or that you aren’t pretty enough or that you aren’t smart enough or that you don’t have what it takes for God to love you, then you just scream out loud and tell the devil he’s a liar.
Truth: God loves you and wants you to know and believe only truth…… and to learn how to shut up the “liar, liar pants on fire” by believing that truth! Believe the truth and stomp out the liar fire today!
