Sirens blaring.
Lightning crashing.
Wind roaring.
It’s tornado season in southeast Indiana.
And we don’t like it!
I’ve grown up with these threats year after year during my 60 plus years and have come to know when to seek shelter and what’s important to take with me to safety.
What would you take to your refuge in case of a tornado warning?
I think about absolute irreplaceable sentimental items like my wedding ring and the diamond earrings Roger gave me for a gift. Scrapbooks and wedding pictures.
I have a whole file box put together (called a NOK box – Next of Kin) that includes all kinds of personal information in case of an emergency, the whereabouts known only by my family. 😊
I think about things that are very important as either irreplaceable or a nightmare trying to replace – like my driver’s license or keys to the vehicles.
But always…always I grab my Bible and put it in that bag going to the basement with my other valuable items.
I don’t know what I would do without that Bible. Of course, it is full of God’s Words and Truth, but it also holds memories, dates of scripture that God gave me during difficult times, explanation of complicated passages that I don’t want to forget and notes highlighting something that stood out to me at the moment of study.
It’s precious.
You could say…Irreplaceable.
As you gather your own important items when a storm is approaching, does God’s Word make the cut?
If not, start small. Open its pages. Get to know the Author. Discover the truth woven throughout its stories, the warmth and comfort of the Psalms and the beauty of God’s creation from the beginning. The more time you spend reading it, the more precious it becomes.
Before you know it, it won’t be something you have to remember to grab – it will be something you wouldn’t dream of leaving behind.
Because when the storms of life come, whether by dark clouds and tornado threats or the everyday challenges of life, God’s Word remains a safe place of comfort, hope and peace.
So I will ask you one more time: if the tornado sirens sounded tonight and you headed for the basement, would your Bible make the trip?
